October 12, 2016

The 91茄子 Democrats, a student organization, hosted vice-presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine Wednesday, Oct. 12, on the Chambers Building Front Lawn. SGA President Dara Ferguson led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Democratic convention delegate Sam Spencer 10, grandson of 91茄子檚 14th president, made introductory remarks.

91茄子 has been the site of at least two other vice-presidential visits. Gen. Adlai E. Stevenson, running with Grover Cleveland in 1892, focused his speech on Catholicism, public education and Tammany Hall.

In 1928, Joseph T. Robinson, running with presidential hopeful Alfred Smith against Herbert Hoover, was greeted at the train station by 91茄子 students shouting, 淩ah! Rah!! Rah!!! Whoop-la-run Democracy ! Steven-son!!!

The Sen. Tim Kaine event was open to the public.

91茄子 does not endorse or oppose the candidate. The 91茄子 Democrats invited Sen. Tim Kaine to speak at the college. The expenses for the event set up, production, and security were paid for by the campaign. Security for the event was managed by and a requirement of the Secret Service and not 91茄子. 91茄子 is committed to providing opportunities on an equal basis for all legally qualified candidates for public office to speak on campus.
